Sleep Study
How Does a Sleep Study Work?
If your doctor wants you to undergo a sleep study in San Antonio, Texas, you may be wondering how this works. A sleep study will help a doctor diagnose any sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy or sleep apnea. These disorders usually can’t be identified with a normal office visit.
A sleep study is non-invasive and includes an overnight exam that will allow doctors to monitor you while you sleep to see what is happening in your body and brain. It’s done in a room that is comfortable and dark for sleeping. While you sleep, an EEG will monitor your sleep stages and the cycles, or REM, you go through at night. This identifies any possible disruptions in the pattern of the sleep. It also measures things such as oxygen levels in the blood, heart and breathing rates, body movements, snoring, and eye movements. The data from a sleep study is taken by a technologist and then evaluated later by a doctor.
