What to Do before a Sleep Test

Wash and dry your hair before going to the lab or clinic. It’s best if you don’t have any oils, gels, conditioners, or sprays in your hair since there are a number of electrodes that will be used. These substances can make attaching the equipment more difficult. Also remove nail polish from your fingers since you will have a pulse oximeter on one finger.
Have an evening meal before showing up for the study but avoid drinking or eating anything with caffeine after your lunch that day.
Have the paperwork filled out ahead of time. Many labs will want you there between 7:30 and 8 p.m. to be accommodated but let them know if you need to show up later or come in early. Be sure to let the lab know if you have any special needs, such as trouble getting in and out of bed.
